So what is Value Line and how can I use it for prospecting?
Value Line is a newsletter, website and e-resource center for information about publicly held companies – individually and within the context of their industry/ies.
As a prospect identification tool, we find it to be very useful.
Say, for example, that you were interested in identifying a cohort of prospects within a particular industry (Biotechnology, for example). Perhaps you don’t know much about the volatility of the industry, or the factors that impact it. Value Line provides reports (some free, others behind the fire wall) that help give you context.
Knowing which companies are the key players and how the top executives are feeling right now (wealthy? worried?) – gives fundraisers a better idea if now is the right time to ask for a gift or to extend an invitation for the prospect to become a key campaign volunteer.
Another thing that is helpful about the Value Line newsletter (The Investment Survey) is that it highlights specific companies that are trending up (or down) within industries that are trending up (or down). As a prospecting tool for companies and for the individual executives at these companies, this kind of timely information keeps our research team ahead of the trends.
